Underdog tag not enough for Victory

Forrestfield’s cup hopes for 2009 are officially over, despite a superb performance from the Youth 18s team.  The first division lads punched above their weight, losing out on penalties to their Premier Division opposition, Quinns Rock FC, after finishing 1-1 in regular time.

At least 50 Forrestfield supporters made the trip north to Innaloo and were treated to an exceptionally skilled game.  Some stunning performances from Nick Smeets at centre back and ?? on the right side of midfield provided Forrestfield with a platform from which to go forward.  James Rogerson continually put himself about up front.  He was unlucky not to score several goals in the first half and the Forrestfield defence were managing quite well against their higher division opposition.

A nil all score line at half-time failed to dampen the Forrie players or supporters’ spirits, despite the wet and windy weather they endured.  Within minutes, Forrestfield were on top and outplaying the formidable Quinns team.  A solid 15 minute period saw Forrestfield produce a number of chances and the boys were unlucky not to convert any goals.

A Quinns counter-attack led to the first goal of the game with a good run down the right wing.  The Quinns winger was able to get in behind the defence and their forward got a touch in before our boy squeezing the ball past Eddie in goals.  It was a tough lesson for Forrestfield, who, until that point, had dominated the second half.

Despite the obvious disappointment of being a goal down, Forrie continued to dominate.  They were rewarded 15 minutes from full-time through James Rogerson.  A low and hard corner from James Willems found James Rogerson at the front post.  His glancing header gave the Quinn’s 28 year old keeper no chance, much to the delight of the black and gold supporters.

The remaining time left saw both teams create chances without success.  Forrestfield looked the better team but the Quinns keeper put on a man of the match performance to deny United the winner.

As with all penalties, a lottery took place.  The Quinns keeper, at 6ft plus, was the difference.  The sheer size of him would have been daunting alone.  Quinns FC took their place in the final, winning on penalties 4-1.

Despite their disappointment, the United boys should keep their heads held high after a great performance.

Well done boys!
